Airtec Front Mount Intercooler Installation & Review
This is my experience swapping to an Airtec front mount intercooler (FMIC) on my R53. I purchased this unit used, but was assured it was in good condition and came off a working car.

My Setup
- PH2 camshaft
- 550cc injectors
- 17% reduction pulley

✅ Pros
- Excellent cooling performance: Intake temperatures stayed around 10°C above ambient even during hard pulls
- Supercharger sound: Much louder supercharger whine compared to any top-mount intercooler I’ve used – night and day difference
❌ Cons
- Low-end drivability issues: The car exhibited a “yo-yo” effect at low RPMs. While this was intended as a track car, during shakedown drives at low speeds, the throttle response felt inconsistent
- Fitment challenges: Installation required trimming components I didn’t expect to modify. This was a used kit – possibly an early version or the pipework may have been previously modified
- Mounting movement: The intercooler had some play where it bolts on, causing slight knocking during hard acceleration from a stop
- Heat soak after idling: If parking for 10 minutes after driving hard, the recovery time wasn’t ideal and intake temperatures spiked. Note: I didn’t modify my crash bar or add extra ventilation holes in the bumper like some installers have done

Installation Notes
The installation proved challenging due to the extensive modifications required:
Required Modifications
- Plastic radiator surround – cut back
- Bonnet inner lips (near grill area) – trimmed
- Bonnet scoop – notched
⚠️ Important: The seller did advise that modifications would be required. Deep markings on the pipework showed where it had previously rubbed against bodywork.
Some owners claim the scoop doesn’t need modifying, but with this specific used kit, I couldn’t see how that would be possible. The bonnet was always pushed up slightly as the blue silicone bends sat against the front grill.
Silicone Boot Modification
The kit included blue silicone boots for the charge pipe connections that had been cut and modified into a V-shape – clearly necessary for fitment on the previous installation. These didn’t feel right to me, so I opted to use the standard MINI boots instead, which fitted much easier, looked better, and sealed properly.

Final Verdict
Would I use this again?
Yes, but only if the car was solely a dedicated track car where I could open up the front bumper for better airflow to the core. With my installation, only the lower half of the cooler was exposed to airflow. I relocated the number plate to the side to see if that would improve cooling, but additional ventilation would be beneficial.
💭 Summary: Excellent cooling performance and supercharger sound, but requires significant modifications in my experience and may exhibit low-speed yoyoing.
