R53 – DIY Front wooden splitter

DIY Front Splitter Build

We designed and built custom front splitters that bolt directly onto the car. For this proof-of-concept project, we started with 8mm plywood. While marine-grade wood would have been ideal, it was significantly more expensive, so we opted for standard plywood and applied a waterproof coating afterward to protect against the elements.

Mounting System

The mounting solution came from an unexpected source. I had five spare solar panel rail mounting brackets left over from a home project, which @r53budgetbuild modified with a single cut and weld. This created a solid method to bolt the splitter to the car’s front crash bar at the front. For the rear, it was nut and bolted to the subframe.

For anyone looking to replicate this build, the part we used is a Fastensol Pantile Roof Hook-Portrait (part number 645376, available at CityPlumbing in the UK). The modification involved cutting the bracket, rotating it 180 degrees, welding it back together, and finishing with a coat of primer or paint.
